Pinatex - When Life Gives You ... Pineapples!

The Fresh Issue| Pinatex Pineapple Leather Shoes by Po-Zu

You have probably already heard of #WhoMadeMyClothes. It's an initiative to raise awareness about ethics in the clothing industry. Fair wage, gender equality, humane working conditions, safety, etc. But what about #HowWasMyClothesMade? What about the origin of fabrics? What about animal rights and ethics? Don't they deserve to be protected too? And let us not forget about pollution, water toxification and climate change, a consequence of the "traditional" ways of making clothes and accessories.

For many years things like leather, wool, and suede have been the only good materials for shoes and clothing in my opinion. That's how I grew up. That's how society has made me think. And probably you too. Anything besides these fabrics would be considered "cheap" and "bad quality".

Times have changed. We are living in a world where your phone knows more about you than you know about yourself. In a time of iCloud. In a time of electric cars. Basically, what I am trying to suggest is this: dear designers, it's time to move on from the outdated ways of making slippers and stilettos. It's time for "luxury" to be redefined into a more meaningful concept. Personally, I can't wait until Stuart Weitzman will jump on the sustainability boat and introduce a zero-leather/vegan collection. At least a few pairs, you know, to test out the waters.ย Until that day comes, I will treasure the two pairs I've purchased a while ago and shop elsewhere for new ones.

And then this happened: I found out about the "new leather", the better one, the bloodshed-free one! I would even say that this new material is ... excitingly unconventional and unconventionally exciting! And that is because it's made of something so different. This "new leather" is called Pinatex - a fabric made out of pineapple leaves fibers. Who knew a fruit could be that versatile?

In the next few days, I will be testing them out and style them with some cute outfits. The weather in Desenzano del Garda is still pretty amazing, so I am thinking an off-the-shoulder dress for this afternoon ...

Stay tuned! (= subscribe or follow me on social media to stay in the loop!)
